While modern surgery is generally safe, there is still a possibility of risks and complications
General risks and complications of all procedures include:
- Heavy bleeding from the surgical site.
- Infection, which may require antibiotics or, in some cases, additional surgery.
- Allergic reactions to sutures, dressings, or antiseptic solutions.
- Haematoma formation, where a large blood clot develops beneath the incision and may need to be drained.
- Pain, swelling, and bruising around the treated area.
- Raised scarring, such as keloid or hypertrophic scars, which may be red, thickened, and itchy. While they can be bothersome, they do not pose a health risk.
- Delayed wound healing, which is more common in individuals who smoke or have diabetes.
- Wound separation, where the edges of the incision do not heal properly.
- Short-term nausea following general anaesthesia, along with other potential anaesthesia-related risks.
