Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed to resolve excess skin and puffiness of the eyelids

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to refine the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids by addressing excess skin and, when necessary, reducing prominent fat deposits. The aim is to create seamless eyelid contours with discreetly concealed scars.

In some cases, changes in the upper eyelid may be influenced by the position of the eyebrows. A comprehensive consultation will help determine the most suitable approach for each individual.

The procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia on an outpatient basis, typically taking between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Following surgery, swelling and bruising gradually subside within the first two weeks, and sutures are usually removed during the first week.

Our team is committed to providing a high standard of care, from thorough preoperative consultations to attentive post-operative support, ensuring a professional and patient-focused experience.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks, and results vary between individuals. It is important to consider all options carefully and seek professional medical advice before proceeding.

General risks & complications that are common to all procedures can be found here.

Specific risks and complications of a blepharoplasty may include:

  • Bruising and swelling around the eyes.
  • Pain and discomfort following the procedure.
  • Excess skin removal, which may leave the cornea more exposed and vulnerable to injury.
  • Eyelid asymmetry, where the eyelids may not appear even.
  • Visible scarring along the incision lines.
  • Irritation in the eyes, such as itchiness, dryness, or excessive watering.
  • Lower eyelid drooping, which often resolves over time but may require additional surgery in some cases.
  • Temporary vision changes, though in rare cases, these may be long-term or even permanent.
  • Extremely rare risk of blindness, with factors like smoking, pre-existing eye conditions, heavy lifting, straining, and coughing potentially increasing this risk.
