Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty is a procedure that changes the angle and shape of protruding or uneven ears in children and adults

Prominent ears result from natural variations in ear development and may affect one or both ears. This can be due to differences in cartilage formation, such as a less defined antihelical fold or a relatively larger conchal bowl.

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to refine the shape and position of the ears. While commonly performed during childhood, the procedure is also suitable for adults. The specific surgical approach, including cartilage reshaping techniques, will be discussed in detail during consultation.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes between 1.5 to 2 hours. Incisions are discreetly placed behind the ear to minimise visible scarring. A protective bandage is worn for the first week, followed by night time use for an additional two weeks. Most individuals can resume sports and physical activities after approximately four weeks.

Our team is committed to providing high-quality care, offering comprehensive preoperative consultations and attentive post-operative support to ensure a professional and patient-centred experience.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks, and results vary between individuals. It is important to consider all options carefully and seek professional medical advice before proceeding.

General risks & complications that are common to all procedures can be found here.

Specific risks and complications of an otoplasty may include:

  • Ear asymmetry, may require additional surgery to correct irregularities in cartilage or shape.
  • Re-protrusion, where one or both ears may shift back to their previous position, potentially requiring further surgery.
  • Nausea and balance issues, may be linked to fluid build-up in the inner ear.
  • Changes in skin sensation, including temporary or permanent numbness around the surgical site and on the ear.
  • Skin complications, where small areas of skin over the cartilage may die, lead to ulcer formation that may take several weeks to heal.
